Dr. J. Reginald Jackson

Dr. J. Reginald Jackson is a multi-accomplished instrumentalist, educator, and music theorist with an emphasis on creating instructional material for playing R&B, Gospel, and contemporary styles by ear. His saxophone and keyboard performances are filled with improvisational ingenuity that weaves the warm and sultry tones of smooth jazz and R&B with the gritty, soulful sounds of gospel fused with classical overtones.

Dr. J. Reginald Jackson’s earliest musical influences developed as a result of his family, private lessons, and participating in school bands and choirs. This exposure cultivated a desire for artistic excellence and global reach. As a result, he has been afforded the opportunity to teach and perform throughout France, Japan, Turkey and other areas around the world.

His passion as a performer and professor has had a major impact on students such as music industry standout Kelvin Wooten, who has written, arranged and produced for artists such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Mary J. Blige, Anthony Hamilton and Kim Scott.

An innovator of ear-training, Dr. J. Reginald Jackson has authored “Teach Yourself to Play the Piano/Keyboard by Ear.” To provide an easy guide to performance. The four-book series with training videos presents a systematic approach to learning a combination of traditional and contemporary chord progressions to play a variety of genres in a short time. He additionally teaches private and  group lessons for woodwinds, Hammond B3 organ, and keyboard in person and online.

In addition to his work as a solo artist and clinician, Dr. J. Reginald Jackson masterfully balances his career with his work in the field of music education. His academic studies include Alabama A&M University, the University of Alabama (B.S.), Northwestern University (M.M.E.) and Florida State University (Ph.D.). He has served as a member of the teaching faculty at the University of North Alabama, Alabama A&M University, Oakwood University and Calhoun Community College.

He is currently a faculty member at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he is the director and administrator of the internationally known UAB Gospel Choir. Dr. J. Reginald Jackson also teaches a variety of other courses in the UAB Music Department.

Even with all of this, Dr. J. Reginald Jackson is dedicated to serving his local community and serves as the Minister of Music for The Living Stones Temple Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
